# agnostic-ai

A CLI that keeps one editable source of agents, skills, rules, hooks and MCP configuration in Markdown and YAML, then syncs it into each AI coding tool's native files.

agnostic-ai keeps a project's AI-tool configuration as plain Markdown and YAML in the repository rather than as separate, hand-maintained files per tool, which the project says otherwise drift apart. It needs no account or external service, and installs through Homebrew, npm, or direct download.

An `init` command selects target tools, `new` scaffolds a rule to edit, and `sync` and `sync --check` write and verify generated files such as CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and Cursor's rules directory, which are treated as build outputs rather than the source of truth. A global sync writes user-level configuration; MCP specs install servers into each tool's user MCP file, and settings specs set the default model and effort per tool. Agents marked read-only map to each tool's own read-only mechanism, such as Cursor's read-only mode or Claude's disallowed-tools list.

Personal overrides can be kept per-project or globally, outside the synced specs, and an import command can compare a project's existing native AI-tool files before the first sync.
