Anthropic's Prompt Engineering Interactive Tutorial

A nine-chapter interactive course that teaches how to write effective prompts for Claude, with hands-on exercises and an example playground for testing prompt changes.

Anthropic's Prompt Engineering Interactive Tutorial

The course walks through the basic structure of a good prompt, common failure modes and techniques to address them, and Claude's strengths and weaknesses, building toward writing prompts from scratch for common use cases. It is organized into nine chapters, from beginner topics such as basic prompt structure, being clear and direct, and assigning roles, through intermediate topics such as separating data from instructions and formatting output, to advanced topics such as avoiding hallucinations and building complex, industry-specific prompts for chatbots, legal, financial and coding use cases, plus an appendix on chaining prompts, tool use, and search and retrieval.

Each lesson includes an example playground for experimenting with prompts and an answer key, and the tutorial uses Claude 3 Haiku throughout. A parallel version is also distributed as a Google Sheets workbook through Anthropic's Claude for Sheets extension.

It is delivered as Jupyter notebooks.
