# codedb

A code intelligence server built in Zig that gives AI coding agents a map of a repository through MCP: focused source context, symbols, callers, outlines, and dependencies, without editing files itself.

codedb is a context engine for coding agents, not an editor: it has no edit capability and instead builds a map of a repository so an agent's own tools can make the edit. Tools exposed over MCP find relevant files and source excerpts, read a symbol's definition and callers, trace a call chain between symbols, and browse directories with file outlines.

It is built in Zig and connects to Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Windsurf, and other MCP clients. Structural search runs locally; the default hybrid retrieval mode also uses hosted embeddings, and a local-only semantic mode is available.

Installation is a single shell script (or a PowerShell script on Windows) that downloads the platform binary and registers codedb as an MCP server in each detected client's own configuration.
