# Codex Free

A local MCP bridge server that lets a ChatGPT Web Pro session call tools on the user's own machine, reading and writing files, running shell commands and git, so ChatGPT can work the way the Codex coding agent does.

Codex Free is a local MCP bridge server, rewritten in Rust from an earlier Bun and TypeScript version, that lets ChatGPT Web Pro call tools on the user's own machine: reading and writing files, running shell commands, git operations and search. It exposes the same tool set Codex gives its own agent, including patching files in place, running interactive or long-running processes, viewing images, and keeping a plan across a task, so a ChatGPT Web session can behave the way the Codex CLI does.

In native-tunnel mode it listens only on the local loopback address, protects its MCP endpoint with a random per-process bearer token, and starts OpenAI's official Secure MCP Tunnel client to forward authenticated traffic without opening an inbound port; a conventional externally managed tunnel is also supported. It bridges ChatGPT-native attachments and generated files into the active local project, returns project files back to ChatGPT as downloadable MCP resources, carries the project's own AGENTS.md and Codex's agent brief so the client knows how to behave, bounds what a tool call can return, and records project-scoped review checkpoints so a task's diff can be inspected.

It requires an existing ChatGPT Plus subscription, is built on tokio, axum and the official rmcp SDK, and is MIT licensed.
