# GitHub MCP Server

GitHub's official Model Context Protocol server, giving AI agents and assistants the ability to read repositories, manage issues and pull requests, analyze code and automate GitHub workflows through natural language.

The server lets a connected AI tool browse and query code, search files and analyze commits across any repository the user can access; create, update and triage issues and pull requests; monitor GitHub Actions workflow runs and analyze build failures; review security findings and Dependabot alerts; and access team discussions and notifications, all through the same MCP interface.

It is available as a remote server hosted by GitHub, which needs only a compatible MCP host such as VS Code 1.101 or newer, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Windsurf plus OAuth or a GitHub personal access token, or as a self-hosted local server for hosts without remote MCP support. Documented installation targets also include GitHub Copilot CLI, Copilot in other IDEs such as JetBrains, Visual Studio, Eclipse and Xcode, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Zed and Rovo Dev CLI.

It is written in Go and licensed under the MIT license.
