# Hibernate Tools

Hibernate Tools is a set of tools that reverse-engineers Hibernate and JPA mapping artifacts from an existing database, and wraps that functionality as Ant tasks and Maven plugins for build integration.

Hibernate Tools reverse-engineers Hibernate and JPA mapping artifacts, such as entity classes and mapping files, from an existing database schema, aiming to make working with Hibernate or JPA more pleasant on top of the underlying APIs and query language.

The project is a hierarchical multi-module Maven build. A core hibernate-tools-orm module holds the base reverse-engineering tools, with a default implementation for current Hibernate and JPA artifacts and an API for extending it to other artifact types or custom templates. hibernate-tools-ant wraps that functionality as Ant tasks, and hibernate-tools-maven wraps it as Maven mojos, so the same reverse-engineering logic is available from either build tool; a shared hibernate-tools-utils module holds general-purpose utilities, and hibernate-tools-test contains tests targeting several databases as well as database-independent tests.
