# Machinist

An open-source software factory that runs repeatable AI coding workflows on a developer's own machine, keeping repository access and credentials local while recording each run from request to handoff.

A worker exposes named commands, each a prompt, an executor and a timeout, configured in `~/.machinist/config.toml`; a command can invoke Codex, Claude Code, another agent CLI, a test runner, a shell script, or repository-owned orchestration. A direct run maps a command name to its executable and uses a supplied `--repo` path as the working directory, rendering the prompt to standard input and streaming stdout and stderr under one overall timeout; a managed submission instead resolves an approved repository name from the worker's own configuration.

Every run streams its output, retains durable events and artifacts, and tracks its terminal outcome, duration and reported token use, so a person can inspect what happened at any stage; a step can be paused for review before it proceeds, and optional merge policies can automate narrowly defined, low-risk changes. Scripts inside a command are intentionally treated as opaque by Machinist itself.

It is written in Go, still described as early access, and installs by cloning its repository and building the `machinist` binary from source.
