# MCP Python SDK

The official Python implementation of the Model Context Protocol, for building MCP servers that expose tools, resources and prompts, and MCP clients that connect to them.

MCP Python SDK is the official Python implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets a developer build servers that expose data and functionality to LLM applications in a secure, standardized way, similar to a web API designed for LLM interactions.

With the SDK a developer can build MCP servers that expose tools, resources and prompts to any MCP host, and MCP clients that connect to any MCP server, over every standard transport: stdio, Streamable HTTP and SSE. An optional CLI extra adds commands for developing, running and installing a server, including the MCP Inspector for trying one out.

Version 2 is the current stable release line, reworked to support the latest MCP specification and to fix long-standing architectural issues; version 1.x remains available on its own branch with critical fixes. It requires Python 3.10 or newer, installs with pip or uv, and is licensed under the MIT license.
