Packages are auto-updated from each project's upstream source control, so the overlay frequently carries unreleased versions ahead of what mainstream nixpkgs offers.
Continuous integration jobs advance nixpkgs and try to upgrade every package, verify that the overlay still builds against the latest nixos-unstable, and confirm the current locked state still builds; packages that build successfully are pushed to a Cachix binary cache so users do not need to compile them themselves. It can be used through Nix flakes, either running or building a specific package directly, or imported as an overlay onto an existing NixOS configuration.
