# Trace — Research Paper Studio

A coding-agent plugin that turns a named research paper into a local, interactive site where every claim links back to the exact page and quote it comes from, distinguishing measured results from the authors' own interpretation.

Trace runs on a coding agent the user already has, with no separate API key, and is invoked with a single instruction naming a paper. It finds the paper on arXiv or, given a DOI or a link from bioRxiv, medRxiv, PubMed Central, ACL Anthology or OpenReview, looks for an open-access copy across that short list of repositories plus the open-access locations OpenAlex lists, downloads it, gathers version history, DOI and citation information, and reads it page by page.

The result is a local, interactive site where every claim carries the exact page and quote it rests on, with measured results, author interpretation and background labeled separately; anything the excerpt does not directly support is never marked as verified.

Trace does not attempt to get past a browser check on OpenReview or PubMed Central's website; for those it asks the user for the PDF or title directly, and setting `UNPAYWALL_EMAIL` lets it also query Unpaywall for an open copy.
