# Xonsh

A full-featured, cross-platform shell whose language is a superset of Python 3, blending shell commands with Python syntax and running on Linux, macOS, Windows, BSD, Jupyter, Android, Raspberry Pi and Nix.

Xonsh is a full-featured, cross-platform shell written as a superset of Python 3, mixing shell commands and Python syntax in the same script. It runs subprocess commands, reads their output as Python objects, and supports ordinary Python expressions and control flow directly at the prompt.

Its ecosystem includes xontribs, loadable extensions such as prompt themes, terminal integrations, and integrations with tools including GitHub Copilot, Jupyter and 1Password, plus command aliases that can wrap external commands or plain Python functions, including piping a shell command's output into a pandas DataFrame or calling a local LLM through Ollama from an alias. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, BSD, Jupyter, Android, Raspberry Pi and Nix, and its own path variable is a first-class Python list.

It is written in Python.
