AGENTS REVERSE ENGINEER (ARE)

A command-line tool that reverse engineers a codebase into layered documentation, per-file summaries, per-directory overviews, and runtime-specific entry points, so AI coding assistants understand a project from the first message.

AGENTS REVERSE ENGINEER (ARE)

AGENTS REVERSE ENGINEER generates multi-level documentation for AI coding assistants by analyzing an existing codebase: per-file summary files covering each file's purpose, exports, and dependencies, per-directory AGENTS.md overviews describing file organization, and runtime-specific entry points such as CLAUDE.md, GEMINI.md, and OPENCODE.md for Claude Code, Gemini, and OpenCode. It uses git-aware incremental updates so only what changed needs to be regenerated.

It is aimed at developers who use AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or Gemini CLI and want their assistant to understand a project's structure without repeating context every session or writing that documentation by hand. It installs through an interactive command that lets the user choose which assistant runtimes to target and whether to install globally or in the current project.
