apfel-chat

apfel-chat is a native macOS chat client for on-device AI, built on Apple Intelligence through the apfel engine. Conversations run entirely locally: no API keys and no network connection are required.

It supports multiple conversations with persistent history and full-text search, built-in speech recognition for input and streaming text-to-speech for replies, and on-device image reading through Apple Vision for OCR, classification and face detection. Replies stream in as token-by-token markdown, and the model's temperature, context window, maximum tokens and system prompt can be tuned from the app.

It requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), and Apple Intelligence enabled, and stores conversation history locally in SQLite.
