Chabeau

A full-screen terminal chat interface for OpenAI-compatible AI APIs, with character cards, personas, presets and early support for the Model Context Protocol.

Chabeau

Chabeau is a full-screen terminal chat interface that connects to OpenAI-compatible AI APIs for real-time conversations, built for speed and sensible defaults rather than as a coding agent. Preliminary support for the Model Context Protocol is in development, letting it connect to local and remote MCP tool servers.

It supports many common providers out of the box, including OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Groq and Mistral, alongside quick configuration of custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Features include Markdown rendering with clickable hyperlinks, character-card support, reusable personas and presets, secure API-key storage in the system keyring, message retry and editing, and a theming system that degrades gracefully on limited terminals. It is written in Rust and released under CC0-1.0.
