Codewhale

An open-source coding agent for the terminal, built in Rust, that reads a project, edits files, runs commands and checks its own work with a hosted or local model, and can split larger jobs across several agents.

Codewhale

Codewhale runs as an interactive terminal interface or through codewhale exec for a scripted or CI task. A plan mode explores a codebase without making changes or running commands, while work mode lets it edit files and execute commands, and permission levels named Ask, Auto-Review and Full Access control how much it can do without confirmation.

It connects to a hosted or local model chosen through /provider and /model, picking up an already-running Ollama instance on its own, and also ships a bundled local web client and a separate native desktop application. An included Computer Use plugin adds tools for observing and interacting with other applications, subject to the operating system's own permissions.

It installs through an install script, or through npm, Cargo, Docker, Nix, Scoop or Android/Termux, with tab completion for common shells. It is written in Rust and licensed under the MIT license.
