Crab Code

A Rust-native, open-source alternative to Claude Code that aligns with its toolset, permission model and interaction patterns while working with Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Bedrock or Vertex models.

Crab Code

Crab Code is an agentic coding CLI built from scratch in Rust. It aligns with Claude Code's toolset, permission model and interaction patterns, but supports several different LLM providers instead of being tied to one.

It runs as an interactive terminal UI, or non-interactively for single-shot or scripted use. Configuration is read from a TOML file with snake_case keys, merged from lowest to highest priority across defaults, the config file, CLI-injected overrides and environment variables, and permission rules can allow or deny specific tool invocations such as running git commands, with deny always winning over allow.

At the time of writing it has 4,940 tests across 25 crates and around 161,000 lines of code, and is under active development.
