Desktop Commander MCP
An MCP server that gives an AI assistant terminal control, filesystem search and diff-based file editing, plus in-memory code execution and support for Excel, PDF and Word files.
Desktop Commander MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that lets an AI assistant search, update and manage files and run terminal commands. It is built on top of an MCP filesystem server and adds search-and-replace file editing, executing long-running terminal commands, and managing the resulting processes.
It can execute Python, Node.js or R code directly in memory without saving files, analyze CSV, JSON or Excel data on request, and read, write, edit and search Excel (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm), PDF and Word (.docx) files without external tools, including surgical XML editing and markdown-to-DOCX conversion. It supports interactive process control for things like SSH sessions, databases and development servers, with output streaming, timeouts, background execution, and pagination of long output to avoid overflowing an assistant's context. A file preview UI in Claude Desktop renders markdown and inline images with a built-in markdown editor, and the server can also be reached remotely from ChatGPT, Claude web and other AI services.
It is written in TypeScript under the MIT license.
