librecode

A small, local-first terminal AI coding agent with no MCP layer, no sandbox and no permission prompts, running built-in tools plus optional Lua extensions directly against the user's own shell and files.

librecode

librecode is a local-first terminal AI agent built as a smaller, simpler alternative to coding-agent CLIs that add permission models, sandboxed tool servers, plugin marketplaces and extension protocols. It has no MCP layer and no sandbox: its built-in tools plus optional Lua extensions are the entire surface area, and tools run with the user's own permissions in their own shell against their own files without interrupting to confirm each step.

It supports OAuth login to ChatGPT/Codex or Claude Pro/Max, an API key for any OpenAI-compatible provider, or a custom provider definition. Its interactive terminal chat streams text and reasoning with chronological tool activity, scrollback, prompt history, mouse selection and image attachments, and its tools cover filesystem reads and writes, shell execution, text and path search, structural syntax-tree inspection and explicit URL fetching. It supports durable subagents for delegated work and asynchronous multi-agent workflows, and keeps sessions in a local SQLite file and auth in a local JSON file, with project state scoped under a project-local directory.

It is a single static Go binary, described as pre-release software with no stability guarantee before 1.0.
