MCPVault

A local MCP server that lets a compatible AI client read, search and edit notes in an Obsidian vault, restricted to the configured vault folder.

MCPVault

MCPVault is a Model Context Protocol server that gives compatible AI clients direct access to an Obsidian vault's notes: listing files, searching content, reading a specific note, and creating or editing notes, while preserving formatting for frontmatter fields that were not changed. Obsidian itself does not need to be running, and no Obsidian plugin is required.

It restricts file operations to the configured vault root, blocking path traversal, symlink escapes, dotfiles and Obsidian's own configuration folder. It runs as a local process started by the MCP client over stdio, so it is not tied to one AI provider, and configuration examples are provided for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT Desktop Enterprise, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Codex, IntelliJ IDEA, Cursor and Windsurf. It is written in TypeScript and requires Node.js 20 or later.
