patent
patent is a command-line tool that searches package registries, GitHub and Hacker News for prior art on a plain-English dev-tool idea, then ranks matches by semantic similarity and summarizes the landscape as Open, Crowded or Saturated.
patent takes a plain-English description of a developer-tool idea and searches 19 sources at once: package registries such as crates.io, npm, PyPI, Homebrew, Packagist and Hex, plus GitHub and Hacker News, so a developer does not have to search each source by hand before building something new.
Matches are embedded locally with fastembed and ranked by semantic similarity rather than keyword match, so differently worded prior art still surfaces. Where a source publishes a last-updated date, matches untouched for two or more years are flagged as stale, though a stale match still counts as evidence the idea has been built. An LLM summarizes the findings into a verdict, floored against the similarity data so it cannot under-rate a populated space; every verdict states which sources were checked. It installs via Cargo, with an optional local Ollama model powering the verdict.
