sms
A self-hosted map tile server that serves the whole OpenStreetMap planet and contour data from mbtiles files, built with an MCP interface for AI agents to plan routes.
sms (simple mbtiles server) is a self-hosted tile server, based on the mbtiles-s3-server codebase and planetiler-generated planet data, that lets you run your own offline map stack instead of depending on a commercial routing service. It is deployed with Podman or Docker by downloading the planet and contour mbtiles files and starting the bundled container image, after which the map is browsable locally.
The project's stated focus is being agent-native: it exposes an MCP interface so an AI agent can chain steps such as geocoding, point-of-interest lookup, routing, GPX export, and Nextcloud upload into a single request, instead of requiring a human to click through a separate app. It integrates with Nextcloud's GpxPod for storing recorded tracks.
Running the full planet setup requires around 101 GB of storage, or roughly 290 GB more if contour lines are included, with 1 core and 512 MB of memory reported as sufficient to serve it.
