Tau

A small, readable coding agent that lives in the terminal, built as a teaching example of how a coding-agent system is put together.

Tau

Tau is a coding agent that runs in the terminal, handling requests such as explaining a repository, adding tests, or fixing a stack trace by reading files, editing code, running commands, and keeping a durable session history while streaming its progress. It is also meant to be read, written to be a clear example of how a coding agent's internals fit together rather than a large production codebase.

Its code separates a provider-neutral model layer, a reusable agent brain covering messages, tools, events, and sessions, and a coding-specific layer that wraps that brain with a CLI, TUI, file and shell tools, and on-disk sessions, so the same core could support a different frontend. It is published on PyPI and requires Python 3.12 or newer, and is also available through conda-forge and pixi.

It is licensed under the MIT license.
