Zotero MCP

An MCP server that connects a user's Zotero research library to Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants so they can search, read, annotate and organize papers.

Zotero MCP

Zotero MCP searches a library by title, author, tag, collection, full text, or meaning, using local, OpenAI, Gemini or Ollama embeddings for semantic search. It reads metadata, BibTeX, full text and page ranges, falling back to page images where text extraction garbles math, figures or tables; places highlighted or boxed annotations on exact words, figures, tables or equations; adds papers by DOI, URL, ISBN, BibTeX or file; and merges duplicate entries.

A local mode reads directly from zotero.sqlite, while writes go through the running Zotero 10+ app or, on older Zotero versions, the web API. It offers both an MCP server for chat apps and a zotero-cli plus an agent skill for coding agents, and an optional integration reports Scite citation tallies and retraction alerts.

It installs with uv tool install zotero-mcp-server or pip, requires Python 3.10 or newer, is written in Python, and is licensed under MIT.
