Zread - AI Repository Reading Assistant
An unofficial command-line tool and MCP server that lets a developer or an AI assistant browse, search and ask questions about a GitHub project's documentation through the Zread.ai service, instead of reading the raw source by hand.
Zread connects to Zread.ai, a documentation service that generates browsable docs and answers questions for public GitHub repositories, and exposes that access in two ways: as a CLI a developer runs directly in a terminal, and as an MCP server that integrates with AI assistants such as Claude and Cline. Commands cover browsing a repository's documentation outline, searching for a keyword across its docs, reading a specific documentation page or a raw source file, discovering trending or recommended repositories, and exporting a repository's docs locally, including generating llms.txt and llms-full.txt files.
AI question-answering, either a single question or an interactive multi-turn chat about a repository, requires a free account token from Zread.ai, while browsing, searching and reading docs work without one. The MCP server can run over stdio, HTTP or SSE transport.
It installs with uvx or pipx, is written in Python, and is released under the MIT license.
