ASCILINE
A cross-platform engine that renders video as real-time ASCII or colored-block text, streamed to a browser canvas over a low-overhead binary protocol at 30 frames per second.
ASCILINE converts video into a stream of text-based frames, mapping pixels to ASCII or colored blocks and streaming the result to an HTML5 canvas over a lightweight binary WebSocket protocol. Because the output is raw text rather than a video codec, real-time CSS filters such as glows and shadows can be applied directly to it, and it needs no GPU-based codec decoding on the receiving device, making playback possible on constrained networks and low-power hardware such as microcontrollers and retro terminals.
It includes an adaptive frame codec for its higher-fidelity ASCII modes, a zero-dependency static web player, and a JavaScript SDK for embedding the player in an application, and can be run with Docker. The project notes that its compact text output could in principle feed downstream text or LLM processing, but says this is a roadmap idea, not an implemented feature.
