LLM Writing Tool

A VS Code extension that grammar-checks documents with a local or Copilot-backed LLM, chunking text into paragraphs and offering inline correction, rewrite and synonym suggestions.

LLM Writing Tool

LLM Writing Tool is a VS Code extension built to replace Grammarly's grammar-checking after Grammarly disabled its API, using a large language model instead of the rule-based checks in tools such as LTeX. It splits a document into paragraphs, asks an LLM to proofread each one, and highlights potential errors that a user can click to view and apply as quick fixes.

It supports either a local llama3.2:3b model run through Ollama or a GitHub Copilot model through the VS Code Language Model API, selectable per command, and a configurable system prompt can adjust the language variant, writing style and behavior, including checking in languages other than English. Beyond grammar checking, its commands can rewrite a selection for clarity or suggest synonyms for a selected expression, and checking can be started or stopped continuously on the current document.

It is written in TypeScript and licensed under Apache-2.0.
