Obscura

An open-source headless browser engine written in Rust for AI agent automation and web scraping, built without Chromium and compatible with Puppeteer and Playwright.

Obscura

Obscura is an open-source headless browser engine written in Rust, built for web scraping and AI agent automation. It renders natively without requiring Chromium, runs real JavaScript through V8, supports the Chrome DevTools Protocol, and acts as a drop-in replacement for headless Chrome with Puppeteer and Playwright.

It can capture screenshots, screencast live pages, and export PDFs directly. Compared with headless Chrome, the project's own figures put memory use at about 30 MB versus 200+ MB, binary size at about 70 MiB versus 300+ MB, and page load at about 85 ms versus about 500 ms, with anti-detect features built in.

The open-source engine is licensed Apache-2.0 with no feature gating. A separate hosted offering, Obscura Cloud, is in development with managed infrastructure and residential proxies.
